The Catchlight Series

October 11th, 2011 by admin

A few years back I had this idea to shoot a series of portraits in which the catch-light from the light source was the motivation for the photo.  The catch-light comes from the reflection of the light source in the subject’s eyes, and is what gives a person the so called “twinkle in their eye”.  I thought, why not cover the light source so that the resulting reflection was the shape I wanted it to be; as long as it was a simple, graphic shape it might be kind of cool.  I kind of forgot about it for a while, but not long ago I realized that my original idea was very much in sync with the way cartoonists use shapes in the eyes to display actions in the cartoons they’re drawing.  For instance when a cartoon dies you might see it’s eyes covered with an “X”, or if a cartoon see’s a large amount of money, it’s eyes might pop out of it’s head and the pupils be replaced with a “$”.  This idea re-invigorated my drive to shoot this project, so after finding some great models and getting Robbie Forrest, stylist extraordinaire, to help me out, I finally got around to shooting it.  I  did three shots where each element of the photograph and the expression of the model served to better exemplify the shape of the catchlight in that particular photo.  These are the results, hope you like them:

CrossFit Raleigh

July 8th, 2011 by admin

I just wrapped up a project with CrossFit Raleigh and it’s owners: Christmas, Chennelle, and Kim.  I’m super stoked on what we got and after not posting anything in quite some time I’m delighted to show you what came out.  First I shot a series of photos featuring each of the women doing a workout that is essential to CrossFit.  Then I thought, what better project to begin introducing myself to the world of video than one involving a few bad-asses doing some bad-ass workouts?  So with the help of Josh Steadman of Steadyfilm Productions I produced, shot, and edited my first video.  The learning curve was steep but it’s been invigorating to begin learning a new skill set.

On a side note the CrossFit Raleigh team, of which these women are a part of, recently qualified for the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games. The Crossfit Games is the Olympics of CrossFit and the CFR team will head to California the end of this month to compete against the worlds best for the title of fittest team on Earth.  So good luck CFR!

Here are the photos (Make sure you click to see them big):

And here is my first video!:

On the Web: ESPN Portfolio Gallery

November 16th, 2010 by admin

A while back, while shamefully neglecting this blog, I had a portfolio gallery up on the ESPN BMX Blog featuring 10 of my photos I’ve shot over the last year or so.  Most of the shots were done in and around BMX hotspot Greenville, NC, and some were done in other areas of good ole’ NC.  If you didn’t visit it yet, you should GO CHECK IT OUT! And thanks to ESPN for the love!

The Best Camera…

September 9th, 2010 by admin

It is well known that the best camera is the one that’s with you.  In the early to mid 20th century Henri Cartier Bresson became famous for his photographs depicting what he called “The Decisive Moment” with a picture quality lower than that of a low-end camera-phone. It doesn’t matter if you have a $50,000 camera set-up, if you don’t have that baby out when the moment happens then it doesn’t matter how expensive it was, because you missed the shot anyways. Now having said that, photographer’s like myself make a living by CREATING the moment, and our ability to do that is what sets us apart from eachother, and other types of photographers. But if your like me, you see many interesting things and moments everyday and I’m not about to lug around my SLR to catch these little things…that’s what my iPhone is for! So click “more” to see some of the “moments” I’ve captured with the only camera I carry with me on a daily basis.

On The Web: POTD on ESPN

A photo of mine was featured as a “Pic of the Day” on ESPN’s BMX blog today.  It’s a photo I shot of Australian BMX shredder Vince Byron a few months back while the sun was setting on a farm in Greenville, NC.  Go check it out!

“My Nose Is A Camera”: Behind The Logo

August 9th, 2010 by admin

You might be wondering what my logo is all about. Is the cartoon supposed to represent Tyler? Is Tyler bald? Why does the camera appear to float in front of his face? This logo was drawn for me by my friend Leigh Ramsdell, BMX legend and team manager for Eastern Bikes. It was originally drawn a few years back when Leigh asked me to come along on an Eastern Bikes team roadtrip as the trip’s photographer. He handed each of us a per diem in an envelope with a little doodle on it drawn in Sharpie, each doodle specific to the person he handed it to; mine being the little guy with a camera for a nose. This trip marked a sort of debut for me as a professional BMX photographer, something I had been aspiring to for about 5 years at that point, so even after I had spent the money in the envelope I kept it as a sort of sentimental souvenir. For me the envelope became a kind of marker of my first professional BMX trip, and looking at it reminds me of the super hot weather, the new bike I got before going on the trip, the friends I made, the scandalous hotel rooms I shared with at least 3 other men, and the most prevalent item on the list: how nervous I was! Up until that point I had only shot BMX photos of my friends and if I missed the shot it was no big deal, it didn’t count for anything. Now the stakes were much higher and if I missed the shot there was no do-overs, that was it.  The trip was a success and I still have some shots from it on the site, and when it came time to build a new site with a new logo it didn’t take me long to look over at the envelope sitting on the bookshelf that is it’s home and think: “Ooh, that would be awesome!”

In Print: “The Independent Weekly”

In this week’s edition of the “Independent Weekly” you can find a photograph I took of Jill Sockman of Blue Lotus Yoga and Movement Arts.  They were finalists in the Indy’s “Best of the Triangle 2010″ in the yoga studio category, and I can vouch for their awesomeness.  If your looking for a place to do yoga in downtown Raleigh then look no further, because it doesn’t get much better than this!  Congratulations to Jill and Blue Lotus!
